Want to Overcome Your Fears and Phobias?
We all experience fear. It’s part of being human. But when fear becomes irrational, intense, or starts to interfere with your everyday life – it may have crossed the line into a phobia. The good news is you’re not stuck with it. Hypnotherapy, especially Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, is a powerful, neuroscience-backed method that can help you gently yet effectively dissolve fears and phobias for good.
In this blog post I will focus on fears and phobias, I’ll share how hypnotherapy can support you in releasing fear from the mind and body, why phobias aren’t fixed, and how I’ve helped many clients move from panic to peace – with lasting results.
What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) is a modern, brain-based approach that blends the principles of neuroscience, positive psychology, and therapeutic hypnosis. Unlike traditional talk therapy that digs through the past, SFH is forward-looking – helping you focus on what you want instead of what you don’t.
SFH works on fears and phobias by calming the fight-or-flight response in the brain and creating new, safe mental patterns. You remain fully in control throughout the process, and most clients report feeling deeply relaxed and lighter after just one session.
What’s the Difference Between Fears and Phobias?
Both fears and phobias activate the brain’s threat system, but they’re not the same thing.
Fear is a natural response to danger. It’s your brain’s way of keeping you safe.
Phobia is an irrational or exaggerated fear of something that poses little to no real threat – yet triggers intense anxiety, avoidance, and often embarrassment.
Common examples of fears and phobias include:
Fear of flying (aviophobia)
Fear of public speaking (glossophobia)
Fear of spiders (arachnophobia)
But phobias can also be incredibly personal and less obvious…
How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Rewires the Brain to Reduce Fears and Phobias
When we experience fear, our brain stores it – often in the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for threat detection and emotional memory. A phobia is essentially a loop that keeps getting triggered, even when there’s no real danger.
Hypnotherapy helps with all fears and phobias in 4 Stages:
Calm the overactive limbic system
Rewire outdated fear responses
Create new, safe associations with previously feared stimuli
Empower you with confidence and control
In hypnosis, the brain enters a relaxed yet alert state (similar to REM sleep), which is prime time for neuroplasticity – the brain’s natural ability to change and reprogramme itself. This is where the magic happens. We update the fear, neutralise the trigger, and reintroduce calm, logic, and safety.
Real-Life Examples of Overcoming Fears and Phobias with Hypnotherapy
Over the years, I’ve worked with clients with so many fears and phobias from common phobias to deeply personal fears you might not even realise are phobias. Here are a few memorable examples:
💬 Phobia of Eating in Public (Social Eating Anxiety)
My client had lived with this phobia for most of her adult life. She was terrified of being watched or judged while eating. Restaurants, work lunches, weddings, even family meals at home caused a rising panic in her chest. She avoided dates, holidays, and any occasion involving food.
In our work together, we gently uncovered the subconscious belief driving her anxiety – a school experience where she was mocked for the way she chewed. Her brain had filed this memory away as a threat, and every meal since had triggered that ancient alarm bell.
Using SF Hypnotherapy, we rewired that emotional loop. She began to visualise herself eating calmly in social settings, and her confidence grew. By session four, she went for lunch with a friend at a busy café. By session six, she hosted a dinner party. Her words in a text message to me several weeks after her first session: “I never believed eating in front of people could ever feel easy, let alone enjoyable. I’ve got my life back – I can’t thank you enough.”
💬 Fear of Mirrors (Spectrophobia)
This may seem unusual, but it’s more common than people think. A client of mine experienced intense panic when catching her own reflection. It wasn’t about vanity – it was a deep-rooted, almost visceral fear tied to shame and dissociation.
She’d cover mirrors, avoid public bathrooms, and even dim the lights to get dressed. We worked with the subconscious messaging her brain had attached to her reflection – and gently began to create a new narrative. One of self-acceptance, safety, and softness.
Through hypnotherapy, she began to see herself with compassion instead of fear. One day she sent me a photo of herself smiling into a mirror, captioned, “Look who I’m finally friends with.”
💬 Fear of Butterflies (Lepidopterophobia)
A client couldn’t walk through parks in spring without feeling his heart race and stomach churn. He felt silly and ashamed but couldn’t control the response. Through targeted hypnotherapy sessions, he was able to shift his brain’s interpretation of butterflies from danger to neutral. Now he enjoys long walks through gardens – even during butterfly season.
💬 Fear of Stickers
Yes, stickers! A deep-rooted childhood phobia that caused embarrassment for years. Through hypnotherapy, I helped his brain unlink stickers from the original fear memory and introduce calm and humour instead. By the end of our work, he bought a roll of stickers and playfully stuck one on his laptop as a reminder of his breakthrough.
💬 Fear of Public Toilets
A seemingly minor issue with major lifestyle impacts. This phobia created avoidance patterns, dehydration, and chronic anxiety during travel. Through relaxation and subconscious reprogramming, his nervous system learned to feel safe again. He now travels freely and with ease.
No matter how niche or unusual your fear feels, please know it is valid – and it is highly treatable.
