The term Non Sleep Deep Rest was recently coined by Stanford Professor and Neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman.

Non Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) Protocols have Amazing Benefits For Our Mind, Body and Emotional Health.

In this blog, I will explain what these words (in that sequenced order) actually mean.

Non Sleep Deep Rest is a system of Deep Hypnotic Relaxation and Yoga Nidra Techniques that achieve States of Focus, Flow and Calm through Mental Stillness and Emotional Balance.

Non Sleep Deep Rest Studies have shown this can improve concentration and aid learning, help you relax deeply and get you into your flow state. It also helps to alleviate anxiety and worry and drastically reduce stress symptoms.

What is Non Sleep Deep Rest?

In very simple terms Non Sleep Deep Rest literally does what it says on the tin!

Let me explain it by breaking it down into the two halves:

NON SLEEP and DEEP REST

NON SLEEP:

You are in a half asleep / half awake state, like a Sunday morning lie in (or sleep in, as they call it in the US) – so you are not fully asleep and not fully wide awake either.

In non sleep, you are in the trance-like, floaty and dreamlike REM brainwave state (Rapid Eye Movement)

REM is also known as the Dreaming State, so in NSDR, you enter into a blend of day dreaming and night dreaming, which is a very interesting place to be indeed.

In REM, the brain is consciously deeply resting, restoring and decluttering. Meanwhile, the subconscious part of the mind is busy calmly processing what it needs to process.

This process leaves the mind feeling clear and in control.

DEEP REST:

The state of deep rest is where your parasympathetic nervous system (which is your relaxed state) is switched on, and your stress (high alert) system is switched off.

This switching of states – from stress into calm, allows for our physical, mental and emotional systems to come together in harmony and begin a super recharge and perform a deep defrag for the brain.

This combination of Supercharged De-fragging inside the whole system, clears the cache of our mind and tops us up with vitality, energy and restores your metaphorical cellular battery power.
