As the dust settles after the vibrant whirlwind of the 2024 UK Hypnosis Convention in London, you might be finding yourself in an odd yet familiar state. A blend of exhilaration and exhaustion, joy and longing—a comedown that feels both energising and draining. It’s like the hypnotic trance of the weekend has lifted, leaving behind a mix of deep connection and a curious void.
Whether you attended the 2024 UK Hypnosis Convention as a speaker, an organiser, or a new delegate exploring the fascinating depths of hypnotherapy, this comedown is not just an end; it’s a gentle invitation to reframe. Let’s explore how to transform this post-convention haze into something meaningful, using powerful tools such as the No/Yes Principle from Good Grief (thank you to the 15 attendees who bought their copy – and a huge thank you to all of you who attended my presentation!)
The Natural Rhythm of Highs and Lows
When we immerse ourselves in an event like the UK Hypnosis Convention, the energy is electric. The knowledge, the camaraderie, the shared passion—it creates a unique kind of high. But as with any peak experience, the following dip can feel unsettling.
It’s important to remember that this ebb and flow is part of life’s rhythm. It mirrors the hypnotic process itself: induction, deepening, transformation, and return. And now, as we return to our daily lives, there is a chance to integrate everything we’ve absorbed.
TIP #1 Recognise the Post-Convention Feelings
Let’s pause (and as Anthony Jacquin says STOP and BREATHE) while gently acknowledge what you might be feeling:
- Exhilaration paired with exhaustion: You’ve taken in a wealth of information, connected deeply, and pushed the boundaries of your comfort zone.
- Grief symptoms: A subtle longing for the hypnotic “tribe” you’ve just left behind, or even comparison paralysis if you’re new and feeling overwhelmed.
- A sense of disconnection: After being so immersed in shared purpose, the return to daily routines might feel isolating.
These feelings are natural. They’re signposts on your journey, not destinations.
TIP #2 Reframe Grief into Gratitude and Growth
Now is the perfect moment to apply the No/Yes Principle. This powerful technique starts with acknowledging the “No” of how you feel but shifts you gently towards a “Yes” that resonates with positivity and productivity.
- Is your current feeling useful?
Take a deep breath and ask yourself this question. If your answer is “No,” then recognise that something needs to change. This isn’t about fighting your feelings but about gently moving towards a place of growth. - Do you want to change how you are feeling?
Imagine the change is already happening. Visualise a miracle: the wave of a magic wand that transforms the longing, grief, or overwhelm into something uplifting. What does that new state feel like? - What feeling do you want to move towards?
Here is where gratitude comes into play. Instead of dwelling on what you miss, focus on what you gained.- Gratitude for the connections made and the lessons learned.
- Gratitude for the opportunity to immerse yourself in something that fuels your passion.
- Gratitude for the next steps this experience has illuminated.
TIP #3 Take Action Towards Your Preferred Feeling
Once you’ve identified the feeling you want to move towards, it’s time to ground it with action:
- What small thing can you do to move towards your preferred feeling?
- Write a thank-you note to someone you connected with at the convention.
- Revisit your notes and set one achievable goal inspired by what you learned.
- Create a ritual to celebrate this period of growth, like lighting a candle and journaling your reflections.
- How will you know when you are there?
Check in with yourself. Notice the shift in your mood, your energy, your outlook. Each step you take towards integrating this experience will feel like a reconnection to that empowering energy of the convention.
A Story of Transformation
During my presentation on grief, I spoke about how grief isn’t just about loss; it’s about the space created when something meaningful shifts. It’s a space where growth happens.
One of my clients once described feeling “lost” after an important life event. They didn’t know what they wanted but were sure of what they didn’t want. By gently using the No/Yes Principle, they began to articulate their preferred outcome—what they truly wanted to feel. Step by step, they moved from longing for the past to creating a compelling vision of the future.
This post-convention period is your chance to do the same. Allow yourself to grieve the end of the event while celebrating its impact.
From Grief to Gratitude
As we part ways with the hypnosis family for now, let’s take a moment to thank the UK Hypnosis Convention organisers – Adam, Sarah, Steve and Rebecca and all the wonderful Room Resource Coordinators for their incredible work. Their vision brought us all together. To every speaker, attendee, and supporter—thank you for contributing to this incredible experience.
Instead of feeling separate, recognise that we are all connected through a shared purpose. The friendships, the lessons, the moments of laughter and learning—they remain with us. They fuel the work we do and the lives we touch.
